In a "Peanuts" strip, Lucy Van Pelt incredulously asked this question of Charlie Brown when she learned he hadn't planned on casting her in a school play or playing her in right field or something, and that's exactly how Thelma & I felt when we were closed out of an open casting call at Brooklyn Industries this afternoon. The winner & his person would get a B.I. gift certificate, an hour of doggie massage, a special edition T-shirt w/the winning doggie's image on it *and* appear in the catalog! Woof, I was sooo excited! But when we got there, 40 minutes before the end of the casting call, there were so many doggies waiting outside the store to have their photos taken that they turned us away. Thelma was so disappointed & annoyed that we walked over there (on a muggy, 87 degree day) only to be turned away w/o them giving me a chance to charm them or so much as a glancing at my cuteness, she phoned the manager & complained. She thought about what she wanted them to do to rectify the situation and decided the answer was: lots of free doggie swag from the many event sponsors or round-trip transportation to the next open call. It's too bad this event was planned poorly, 'cause it could have been lots of fun for many more dogs & their people. We'll see if someone gets back to her and provides us w/good customer service.
If not, well, if I know Thelma, she'll launch a one-woman/one-dog girlcott of Brooklyn Industries. She'll be Doña Quixote and I'll be her faithful…uh, whomever. (Did Don Quixote have a dog?)
